Cremation Urn Info and FAQ

The purpose of a cremation urn is to hold the ashes (cremains) of a dearly departed loved one, the urn can be housed in a niche, columbarium, direct burial or kept at home.  If you are to scatter the ashes an urn can be used as a permanent memorial or remembrance piece. The urn does not necessarily have to hold the cremains, it can hold a lock of hair, special momento,  jewelery item, photograph or something that is special to you and your family.

What size urn will I need

The industry guide is that for every pound of body weight, allow one cubic inch of cremated remains.  Standard size urns have approx 190 cubic inches of internal volume and are suitable for an average adult.  Whether you need a standard, medium, small, or even multiple cremation urns is up to you,  and determined by the size of the person. Fine-cremationurns.com offers a wide range of different sized cremation urns to fulfill all your needs.

How do I seal the urn

You can choose to not seal your urn if the ashes are to be place inside using a sealed plastic bag, however should you choose to seal the lid, it can easily be sealed with a good quality silicon sealant which can be found at any home depot or hardware store.  Simply apply a bead of  sealant around the inside of the lid, and then securely fasten the lid on to the cremation urn.  If you wanted to someday remove the lid, it is possible if done carefully by a strong person. Simply, twist the lid back and forth until it releases.

Who puts the ashes into my urn

Most the time, a funeral home will assist you with the ashes if requested.  In some instances, you will receive the cremated remains back from the crematory or funeral home in a plastic bag. We recommend keeping the remains in the plastic bag, and then placing them into the urn. Should this be uncomfortable action for you to do, talk to your funeral director or funeral home and ask them if they will do this for you.  If the bag is too large to fit in the opening of the urn, you can ask the funeral home to carefully pour the ashes directly inside then seal the lid using silicon sealant.

Do I fill the keepsake myself

Yes, however, should this be uncomfortable action for you to do, talk to your funeral director or funeral home and ask them if they will do this for you.
